As
Ramadan approaches, it's time to explore how to nourish our bodies wisely
during this sacred month.
Today,
I'll share three important principles I follow as a dietitian in Ramadan. Let's
delve into practical tips for a nourishing fasting experience.
Join
me as we embark on this journey to make Ramadan not just spiritually enriching
but also physically fulfilling.
1) I'd Never Take Sugary Drinks in Iftaar
Sugary
drinks can be tempting after a day of fasting, but indulging in them can lead
to a spike in blood sugar levels followed by a crash, leaving you feeling
sluggish and fatigued.
Instead,
opt for hydrating alternatives like water, natural fruit juices, lemonades or
detox water to replenish your body's fluids without the added sugars. These
alternatives will keep you hydrated and energized throughout the evening.
2)I'd Never Stuff Myself with Just Fried Items
While
fried foods may be a Ramadan staple, overindulging in them can cause problems
for your digestive system and leave you feeling bloated and uncomfortable.
Instead,
focus on incorporating a variety of nutritious foods into your iftar meal,
including lean proteins, whole grains, and plenty of vegetables.
By
diversifying your plate, you'll nourish your body while still enjoying the
flavours of Ramadan.
3)I'd Never Overeat or Over-Drink in Sehri
Overeating
or over-drinking during sehri can lead to feelings of lethargy and discomfort
throughout the day.
Instead,
aim for a balanced sehri meal that includes complex carbohydrates, lean proteins,
healthy fats and fibre to provide sustained energy throughout the fasting
hours.
Additionally,
prioritize hydration by drinking plenty of water during non-fasting hours and
avoiding excessive caffeine intake, which can contribute to dehydration.
As
we embark on the journey of Ramadan, let's prioritize our health and well-being
by making mindful choices about our dietary habits.
We can ensure a nourishing and fulfilling Ramadan experience. Let's embrace these principles and approach the month with gratitude, mindfulness, and a commitment to our health.
